Who this plan suits
Families and first-time hill visitors. Everything is low on effort except Shimla's slopes.
Day by day
Day 1: Arrive; the Ridge, Christ Church, Mall Road
- Check in near a lift or walking route to Mall Road.
- Evening on the Ridge.
Day 2: Jakhu and the Viceregal Lodge
- Jakhu temple by ropeway or on foot; mind the monkeys.
- Afternoon tour at the Viceregal Lodge.
- Lakkar Bazaar for wooden crafts.
Day 3: Kufri and the Himalayan Nature Park
- Leave by 8 am; Kufri is about 20 km away.
- Mahasu peak on foot or pony; agree the price first.
- Nature park on the Chail road. Back before late afternoon.
Day 4: Toy train to Kalka; depart
- Board at Shimla station; the line is 96.6 km and takes most of the day.
- Connect at Kalka for Delhi or Chandigarh.
Best time for this trip
March to June for pleasant weather; late December to February for a chance of snow, which is likelier at Kufri than in town.
Practical notes
- Book toy-train seats on IRCTC well ahead.
- Taxis cannot enter Mall Road; expect a walk or the public lift.
- On snow days the Kufri road jams; go early or skip it.
- Carry a warm layer all year.

Frequently asked questions
Is four days too long for Shimla?
Not with Kufri and the toy train. Without them, two to three days is enough.
Should I take the toy train up or down?
Either. Many take it down, so the last day is restful.
Will there be snow?
Possibly between late December and February, more often at Kufri.
Can I add Chail?
Yes; replace the nature park afternoon or add a day.
