Hampta Pass Trek
Dramatic transition from lush Kullu valley to the barren mountains of Lahaul & Spiti.
Hampta Pass is considered one of the most dramatic cross-over treks in the Indian Himalayas. Starting from the lush, pine-scented meadows of Jobra in Kullu Valley, you climb past rushing glacial streams, cross snow bridges, and reach the high pass (14,100 ft) before descending into the stark, lunar landscapes of Chandra Valley in Spiti.
As an added bonus, the trek includes a detour drive to the breathtaking crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake.
Best Time to Visit
Drive through the 42 hairpin bends of the Pir Panjal range to Jobra roadhead. Begin a gentle 2-hour walk along Rani Nallah through maple and birch forests to the scenic Chika campsite by the river.
Cross the icy cold stream of Rani Nallah barefoot. Walk through wide valley floors filled with Himalayan wildflowers and yellow buttercups before reaching Balu Ka Ghera (the bed of sand).
The summit day! Start early in the morning navigating snow patches and boulders to the Hampta Pass ridge. Witness panoramic views of Mt. Indrasan and Deotibba. Steep descent on snow slides into Siagoru camp.
Trek downhill alongside the roaring Spiti riverbed to Chatru. Board 4x4 vehicles for a drive across Kunzum Pass road to the emerald waters of sacred Chandratal Lake.
Drive along the Chandra River and cross through the majestic Atal Tunnel back into the green Kullu valley, arriving in Manali by 2 PM.
