Why Season Matters in Banaras
Varanasi (Banaras) experiences extreme continental weather—scorching summers where temperatures easily cross 45°C, and heavy monsoons that cause water levels in the Ganges to rise significantly. Choosing the right time to visit ensures comfortable walking tours through the ancient galis and clear, beautiful weather for early morning boat rides.
1. Winter (October to March): The Ideal Season
Weather: Pleasant daytime temperatures ranging between 15°C and 25°C, with crisp, foggy mornings and cool evenings.
Why Visit: This is the absolute best time for exploration. Walking through the narrow cobblestone lanes, visiting the Kashi Vishwanath temple, and taking sunrise boat rides are exceptionally comfortable without the exhausting summer heat.
Key Highlight: The spectacular festival of Dev Deepawali (usually in November), when all 84 ghats are illuminated with millions of earthen lamps (diyas).
2. Summer (April to June): For Budget Travelers
Weather: Extremely hot and dry, with afternoon temperatures frequently soaring above 40°C to 45°C.
Why Visit: Sightseeing is restricted to early mornings and late evenings. However, this season offers massive discounts on heritage hotels and fewer crowds.
Travel Tip: Stay hydrated, wear loose cotton clothing, carry an umbrella or hat, and schedule outdoor activities before 10:00 AM or after 5:00 PM.
3. Monsoon (July to September): For Cultural & Offbeat Seekers
Weather: Moderate to heavy rainfall with high humidity levels.
Why Visit: The river Ganges swells up, submerging the lower steps of the ghats, which creates a unique, dramatic landscape. It's a quieter time for photography and experiencing the romantic, rain-washed charm of the city.
Travel Tip: Boat rides on the river may occasionally be restricted or suspended if water currents become too strong or unsafe.
