Short answer: Manali to Sissu is about 40 km along National Highway 3 through the Atal Tunnel, and takes around 1.5 hours in clear conditions. It works as a day trip, but an overnight stay lets you see the valley without the midday convoy of tourist cars. In winter the road is frequently restricted after snowfall, so always have a plan B.
The route, stage by stage
| Stage | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Manali → Palchan / Solang turn-off | Valley road north of town. This is where traffic builds on busy days. |
| Solang side → Dhundi → south portal | Climb to the tunnel entrance, about 25 km from Manali. Snow and police checks happen here in winter. |
| Atal Tunnel | 9.02 km under the Pir Panjal range. |
| North portal → Sissu | A few kilometres down the Chandra valley to Sissu, at about 3,120 m. |
The change of landscape is the point of the drive: you enter the tunnel in a green, forested valley and come out in the drier, wider terrain of Lahaul. For the tunnel itself, read our Atal Tunnel guide.
How long to allow
- Driving time: about 1.5 hours each way when the road is clear.
- On peak days (weekends, May–June, late December): add an hour or more for queues near Solang and the portal.
- A comfortable day trip: leave Manali by 7–8 am, spend three to four hours around Sissu, and start back by early afternoon.
Leaving early matters more than anything else. It gets you ahead of the traffic and, in winter, back before afternoon weather.
Ways to get there
| Option | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Own car | Flexible stops, families | Fine in summer. In snow, an ordinary car without chains may be turned back. |
| Local taxi | Winter visits, first-timers | Local union rates apply and change by season — agree the fare and waiting time before leaving. See taxi fares in Manali. |
| 4x4 with local driver | Days with snow on the road | Often the only vehicles police allow after snowfall. |
| Bus | Budget travellers | HRTC runs services into Lahaul, mainly in the summer season. Check the current timetable at the Manali bus stand. |
| Bike or scooter | Summer riders | Not for winter. Carry warm layers even in June. |
We have not quoted fares because they change with season and demand.
What to do when you get there
- Look across the Chandra river to the waterfall opposite the village, locally called Palden Lhamo dhar.
- Walk around the small lake beside the village.
- Continue towards Koksar (about 14 km) or Gondhla (about 11 km) if you have time.

Day trip or overnight?
| Day trip | One night in Sissu | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Short Manali holidays, families with small children | Photographers, couples, anyone continuing to Keylong or Jispa |
| You get | The tunnel, the waterfall view, a walk by the lake | Quiet mornings and evenings, time for Koksar or Gondhla |
| Watch out for | Midday crowds; pressure to rush back | Cold nights above 3,000 m; limited stays in winter — confirm heating and that the property is open |

Manali to Sissu in winter
This is the most popular time to go and the least predictable. Past winters show a clear pattern: after fresh snow, police stop vehicles at Nehru Kund or Solang Nala, allow only 4x4s further, or close the route to tourists altogether. Hundreds of cars have been turned back in a day, and vehicles have slid and collided near the tunnel portals.
- Ask your hotel in the morning whether tourist vehicles are being allowed through.
- Use a local driver with snow chains rather than driving your own car on snow.
- Start back by early afternoon, or earlier if snow starts falling.
- Plan B: if the tunnel is shut, snow is usually still reachable around Solang. See is Solang Valley worth visiting.

What to carry
- Layers, gloves, a cap and sunglasses — glare off snow is strong.
- Shoes with grip. Rental snow boots are available around Solang in season.
- Water, snacks and any medicines; shops are few.
- Cash, and offline maps.
A note on altitude
You climb from about 2,000 m in Manali to above 3,000 m in under two hours. Take it slowly for the first half hour, drink water, and head down if anyone develops a strong headache or nausea.
