Jispa Travel Guide: Getting There From Manali, Where to Stay and What to See

F
By Funtoor Travel Team··8 min read

Short answer: Jispa is a small village at about 3,200 m on the banks of the Bhaga river in Lahaul, on the Manali–Leh highway (NH3), roughly 20–22 km north of Keylong and 7 km short of Darcha. From Manali it is roughly 90–95 km through the Atal Tunnel — a half-day drive. It is a summer destination: heavy snow isolates it from about November to April.

People stop at Jispa for two reasons. It is a quiet, scenic place to spend a night by the river, and it is a sensible overnight halt for acclimatisation before the high passes on the way to Ladakh.

Where Jispa is

FromApproximate distanceNotes
ManaliAbout 90–95 kmVia the Atal Tunnel, Sissu and Keylong
KeylongAbout 20–22 kmLahaul’s main town; last place with wider supplies
DarchaAbout 7 kmCheckpost village further north

The Manali figure is our sum of the published Manali–Keylong (about 71 km) and Keylong–Jispa distances; treat all of these as approximate.

Manali to Jispa: the drive

  1. Manali to the Atal Tunnel — about 25 km to the south portal, then 9.02 km through the tunnel. See our Atal Tunnel guide.
  2. North portal to Sissu — the first stop in Lahaul, at about 3,120 m. Worth a break: places to visit in Sissu.
  3. Sissu to Keylong — down the Chandra valley and up the Bhaga. Refuel and withdraw cash here.
  4. Keylong to Jispa — the last 20-odd kilometres along the Bhaga river.

Before the tunnel, Manali to Keylong alone took five to six hours over Rohtang Pass; it is now about two. Allow four to five hours for the whole Manali–Jispa drive with stops, and more if the road is being repaired.

Ways to travel

OptionNotes
Own car or bikeThe usual choice in season. Check your vehicle, carry a spare and a basic toolkit.
Taxi from ManaliShared and private taxis run on this route. Agree fare, waiting and return before leaving.
HRTC busBuses run between Manali, Keylong and Jispa in summer, broadly June to October. Confirm timings at the bus stand.

When to go

PeriodWhat to expect
June – SeptemberMain season. Summer highs around 15 °C; nights often 3–5 °C.
OctoberClear and cold. Stays begin to close.
November – AprilHeavy snowfall isolates the village; snow beyond Keylong restricts road access. Not a tourist season.

Even in July you will want a warm jacket after dark.

What to see and do

  • The Bhaga riverside. The reason most people come: open valley, river and mountains, with very little else competing for attention.
  • Jispa monastery. A small local monastery in the village.
  • Darcha. About 7 km on, where the valley opens towards the high passes.
  • Keylong. Monasteries around the town are a common half-day outing; ask locally which are open to visitors.
  • High-altitude lakes and passes on the Leh road. Travellers often continue towards Baralacha La and the lakes along the highway. These are well above 4,000 m and open only for part of the year — treat them as a separate, weather-dependent day and confirm road status in Jispa or Darcha before setting off.

We have deliberately not given distances or heights for the lakes and passes beyond Darcha, because we could not verify them to our standard. Ask your host or driver for current conditions.

Where to stay

Options are homestays, small hotels and riverside camps. Tourism here has grown since the Atal Tunnel opened, but it is still a village: book ahead in July and August, and ask about heating, hot water, meals and whether the property is open on your dates. We don’t publish prices because they change through the season.

Altitude and safety

  • At about 3,200 m, mild altitude symptoms are common on the first night. Keep the first evening easy, drink water and avoid alcohol.
  • If you are going on towards Ladakh, a night at Jispa or Keylong is a sensible step rather than climbing straight over the passes.
  • Do not drive after dark; the road is narrow in places and unlit.
  • Medical facilities are limited beyond Keylong. Carry your own medicines.
  • Network coverage is patchy; carry cash and offline maps.

A simple 2-night plan from Manali

  1. Day 1: Leave Manali early; Atal Tunnel; stop at Sissu; lunch in Keylong; reach Jispa by late afternoon.
  2. Day 2: Easy morning by the river; short drive to Darcha or back to Keylong’s monasteries; early night.
  3. Day 3: Return to Manali, or continue north if that is your plan and the road is open.

For the longer route, see the Manali to Leh highway road trip guide.
