Not every couple has a week free for a full Himachal circuit — sometimes you need somewhere close enough to shoot and be back within a day or two. These are the closest locations to Delhi and Chandigarh that still deliver a proper mountain backdrop.
1. Kasauli (from Chandigarh: ~1.5 hours)
The single closest genuine hill-station option to Chandigarh — colonial cottages, pine-lined lanes and clear valley views, all reachable comfortably in a half-day trip with time to shoot and return.
2. Morni Hills (from Chandigarh: ~1.5 hours)
A lesser-known Shivalik range escape with a small lake and forested hills — quieter than Kasauli and less photographed, which can work in your favor if you want a location without other couples doing the same shoot nearby.
3. Chail (from Chandigarh: ~2.5 hours)
The palace grounds and forest views make it worth the slightly longer drive — a good middle-ground option between an easy day trip and a full overnight excursion.
4. Nangal and Gobind Sagar Lake (from Chandigarh: ~2.5–3 hours)
For couples who want water in the frame rather than only mountains — the reservoir's open shoreline offers a different look entirely, and you can pair it with a speed boat shot if you want something more dynamic (see our Gobind Sagar Lake guide).
5. Shimla (from Chandigarh: ~3 hours, from Delhi: ~7 hours)
Further than Kasauli or Chail but still doable as an overnight trip, with the widest variety of backdrops on this list — colonial architecture on the Ridge, forest trails, and meadow options at nearby Kufri.
6. Dhauladhar Foothills via Pathankot (from Delhi: ~7–8 hours)
If you're driving from Delhi rather than Chandigarh, the lower Dhauladhar foothills near Pathankot give snow-peak backdrops without committing to the full drive to Dharamshala.
7. Mussoorie (from Delhi: ~6–7 hours)
The closest proper hill station to Delhi in the other direction — colonial-era buildings, valley viewpoints and waterfalls, reachable as a long day trip or comfortable overnight.
Planning a Short Shoot
For a same-day or overnight shoot, plan around one location rather than trying to combine two — travel time eats into golden hour faster than you'd expect on hill roads. Book photographers who already know the specific location's best light and access points, since local knowledge saves hours you don't have on a compressed timeline.
