Gobind Sagar Lake, Nangal: Speed Boating & Water Sports Guide

Gobind Sagar is the vast reservoir created by the Bhakra Dam, straddling the Himachal-Punjab border near Nangal and Bilaspur — and one of the few places within a few hours of Chandigarh where you can genuinely open up a speed boat.

Why Gobind Sagar Works for Water Sports

Unlike most Himachal lakes, which are small enough for a short paddle boat loop, Gobind Sagar is a proper reservoir — 90-plus km long when full, with open stretches of calm, deep water that make it one of the better spots in North India for speed boating and jet skiing rather than just pedal boats.

Speed Boating

Operators near the Nangal and Anandpur Sahib shoreline run speed boat rides ranging from short 10–15 minute sprints to longer 30-minute circuits further out onto the lake. Expect to pay roughly ₹500–1,500 per person depending on ride length and group size — it's one of the more affordable adrenaline activities in the region.

Jet Skiing

Jet ski rentals are available at the same operators, usually priced a bit higher than speed boats (₹800–2,000 for a short session) and requiring a basic safety briefing before you head out solo or with an instructor.

Bhakra Dam Viewpoint

Before or after your time on the water, the Bhakra Dam itself — one of the tallest gravity dams in the world — is worth the stop. Guided tours of the dam and its museum run through the Bhakra Beas Management Board, subject to security clearance on the day.

Naina Devi Temple

Perched on a hilltop above the lake, this Shakti Peeth temple offers a sweeping view down over Gobind Sagar's full expanse — a natural add-on if you're already in the area, reachable by road or a cable car from the base.

Anandpur Sahib

One of Sikhism's most sacred sites sits a short drive from the lake's Punjab-side shore, home to the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum — worth combining into a single day trip alongside the water sports.

Best Time for Boating

October to March offers the calmest water and most comfortable weather for being out on the lake. Summer (April–June) is hot but still runs boats, usually in the cooler morning hours; monsoon season sees water levels fluctuate with dam management, so it's worth checking conditions before a summer or monsoon trip.
