Short answer: The places that work best for a mixed-age family are those with short transfers, moderate altitude and plenty to do without long drives: Shimla, Manali, Nainital and Dalhousie in the hills; Jaipur and Udaipur for heritage; Jim Corbett for wildlife; Kerala and Goa for water and beaches; and Rishikesh for a short break from Delhi. Match the place to the season first, then to the youngest and oldest person travelling.

Places to think twice about with small children or elders
Ladakh, Spiti and other places above about 3,000 m carry a real risk of altitude sickness and are far from hospitals. They can be done with families, but need slow acclimatisation and a doctor's advice for infants, older travellers and anyone with heart or lung conditions. See is Leh Ladakh suitable for family trips.
Planning tips that matter more than the destination
- Cap the driving: four to five hours a day is plenty with children.
- Stay two nights minimum in each place.
- Check the room, not the photos: lift or stairs, heating in winter, distance from parking.
- Carry basics: motion-sickness medicine, snacks, a warm layer for everyone.
- Avoid peak weeks if you can: late May to mid-June and the Christmas–New Year week.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best place in India for a family vacation?
There is no single best. For hills, Shimla and Manali are the easiest; for culture, Jaipur and Udaipur; for a relaxed week, Kerala or Goa.
Which hill station is best with young children?
Shimla, Nainital and Dalhousie: moderate height, short drives and easy walks.
Is Ladakh safe for children and older parents?
It needs care. The altitude is high, so plan rest days and take medical advice first.
How many days should a family trip be?
Four to seven days, with at least two nights at each stop.
When should we book for summer holidays?
As early as you can. Trains and well-located family rooms sell out weeks ahead.
