Short answer: Dalhousie is a hill station in Chamba district at about 2,000 m, built across five hills. Khajjiar, a meadow with a small lake surrounded by deodar forest at about 1,900–2,000 m, is 22–24 km away. Between them are the Kalatop forest and the walk to Dainkund peak (about 2,745 m). The usual approach is by road from Pathankot, roughly 80–85 km. Three days is enough for both at an unhurried pace.

What to see in Dalhousie
- Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk: the two squares joined by level walking roads, with the town's churches nearby.
- The Mall walks: gentle forest-edge roads that suit older travellers and children.
- Panchpula: streams and a small waterfall, best after the rains.
- Tibetan market: near Gandhi Chowk.
Khajjiar
Khajjiar is a wide green meadow with a pond at its centre and thick deodar forest all round, inside the Kalatop–Khajjiar sanctuary. It is a place for walking the edge of the meadow, visiting the old Khajji Nag temple and sitting still. Pony rides and zorbing are offered in season; agree prices first. Most people visit as a day trip from Dalhousie, but a night here is quieter once day visitors leave. The road can close after heavy snowfall in winter.
Kalatop and Dainkund
- Kalatop: a deodar and oak forest reached from Lakkar Mandi. A barrier controls vehicles on the roughly 3 km forest track and a vehicle entry fee is charged; many visitors walk it instead. Wildlife recorded here includes ghoral, barking deer, langur and black bear, though sightings are a matter of luck.
- Dainkund peak: the highest point near Dalhousie, at about 2,745 m. The walk is described as easy, roughly 1.5–2 hours up, along a ridge to a small temple, with wide views on clear days.
Both are slippery in the monsoon and can be under snow in winter. Wear shoes with grip and carry water; there is little on the trail.
When to go
- March–June: the main season; mild days and green meadows.
- July–August: monsoon; lush but misty, with slippery trails and landslide risk.
- September–November: clear skies and the best mountain views.
- December–February: cold, with snowfall in some spells. Roads to Khajjiar and Lakkar Mandi may close temporarily.
Getting there
- Train: to Pathankot, then a bus or taxi up to Dalhousie.
- Road: overnight buses run from Delhi and Chandigarh; by car the route goes through Pathankot.
- Air: Kangra (Gaggal) and Amritsar are the usual airports, both a long drive away.
Dalhousie combines naturally with Chamba town, and with Dharamshala for a longer trip — see things to do in McLeod Ganj.
A simple three-day plan
- Day 1: arrive from Pathankot; evening walk between Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk.
- Day 2: Lakkar Mandi for the Dainkund walk in the morning, Kalatop in the afternoon.
- Day 3: Khajjiar, with Chamba town if time allows, then back.
