Short answer: they are parts of one place. Dharamshala is the town and district headquarters; McLeod Ganj is its upper suburb, about 700 m higher, where most visitors stay. Choose McLeod Ganj for sights on foot and atmosphere, Dharamkot or Bhagsu for quiet and trails, Naddi for mountain views and a car-friendly stay, and lower Dharamshala if you are here for the cricket stadium, work, or onward transport.
How they fit together
| Area | Height | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Lower Dharamshala (Kotwali Bazaar) | About 1,380 m | The commercial town: bus stand, offices, markets |
| Sidhbari and the valley | Lower | Quieter valley area; the state assembly building, Norbulingka nearby |
| McLeod Ganj | About 2,082 m | Tibetan quarter and traveller hub; the Dalai Lama’s temple |
| Bhagsu | Just above McLeod Ganj | Temple, waterfall, guesthouses and cafés |
| Dharamkot | Above McLeod Ganj | Quiet village; yoga, meditation, trailheads |
| Naddi | Beyond Dal Lake | Viewpoint village facing the Dhauladhar range |
The road distance between lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj is short, but it is a steep, winding climb and the single main road jams on busy days. Treat it as a 30–45 minute transfer at peak times rather than a quick hop.

| Feel | Indian hill town | Busy, Tibetan, international | Laid-back village | Quiet, scenic |

| Weather | Milder | Cooler; snow or sleet in winter | Cooler still | Cool and exposed |
| Noise | Town traffic | Lively until late | Quiet | Quiet |
Who should stay where
- First-time visitors, two to three days: McLeod Ganj. You can walk to the temple complex, the museum and the market.
- Couples and slow travellers: Dharamkot or upper Bhagsu, for quiet evenings and forest walks.
- Families with a car, or older travellers: Naddi or the lower valley, where rooms are larger, parking exists and you are not hauling luggage up stairs.
- Trekkers: Dharamkot, close to the start of the Triund trail. See our Triund trek guide.
- Cricket match or official work: lower Dharamshala, near the HPCA stadium.
- Long stays and courses: Dharamkot, Bhagsu or Sidhbari.
Things people get wrong
- Booking “Dharamshala” and expecting to walk to the temple. Check the map: a hotel in lower Dharamshala is a taxi ride from McLeod Ganj.
- Driving into McLeod Ganj at the weekend. Lanes are narrow and parking is scarce. Ask your hotel where to park before you arrive.
- Underestimating stairs. Many guesthouses in Bhagsu and Dharamkot are reached by footpath. Ask how far the room is from the road if you have heavy bags or limited mobility.
- Assuming the same weather. McLeod Ganj is noticeably colder than the lower town, and upper areas get snow or sleet in winter.
Questions to ask before you book
- Exactly where is the property, and how far is it on foot from the nearest road?
- Is there parking, and is it on site?
- What heating is available in winter, and is it charged separately?
- Is there reliable hot water and a power backup?
- How far is it from the main square or the trailhead you care about?

Can you do both?
Yes, and on a longer trip it works well: two nights in McLeod Ganj for the sights, then one or two in Dharamkot, Naddi or the valley to slow down. You do not need to change hotels to see everything, though — the areas are close enough for day visits. See things to do in McLeod Ganj and things to do in Dharamshala.
