Short answer: most travellers take an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi, which takes about 10 to 12 hours. The fastest way is a flight to Kangra (Gaggal) airport, about 12–15 km from Dharamshala. By train you go to Pathankot, roughly 85–90 km away, and continue by taxi or bus. By car the drive is around 450–465 km. Dharamshala has no broad-gauge railway station.
The options compared
| Mode | Typical time | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overnight bus | About 10–12 hours | Budget and convenience; you arrive in the morning | Check whether it ends at lower Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj |
| Flight to Kangra (DHM) | About 1.5 hours in the air; around 3 hours door to door | Short trips, older travellers | Few flights; weather cancellations happen |
| Train to Pathankot + road | Train time plus 2.5–3 hours by taxi | Those who prefer rail | A change of vehicle; arrive in daylight if you can |
| Own car or taxi | About 7–8 hours of driving, more with stops | Families, flexible stops | Hill driving at the end; parking is difficult in McLeod Ganj |
Times are compiled from operator and route listings and vary with traffic, weather and the service chosen.
By bus
Overnight AC Volvo and multi-axle buses are the most popular choice. HRTC, the state transport corporation, runs services from ISBT Kashmere Gate, and private operators run from several pick-up points in Delhi.
- Time: roughly 10 to 12 hours. Ordinary services take longer.
- Where it stops: many buses terminate at the Dharamshala inter-state bus stand in the lower town. Some continue up to the McLeod Ganj bus stand. Check before you book — it saves a taxi ride with luggage early in the morning.
- Booking: use the HRTC site for state buses, and compare timings and drop points for private ones.
- Comfort: the last few hours are winding hill road. If you get motion sickness, take precautions and choose a seat near the front.
We have not quoted fares because they change with season and operator.
By air
Kangra airport at Gaggal (code DHM) is the nearest, about 12–15 km from Dharamshala depending on where you are staying. Flight time from Delhi is about an hour and a half.
- There are only a few flights a day, on small aircraft, and fares rise quickly in season.
- Flights are disrupted by poor visibility and monsoon weather. Avoid tight onward connections.
- From the airport, prepaid taxis take about 35–45 minutes to Dharamshala and longer to McLeod Ganj. Local buses run from the highway outside the airport.
- The nearest large airport is Chandigarh, about 250 km away by road.
By train
Dharamshala has no direct railway station.
- Pathankot is the nearest major railhead, about 85–90 km away. From there a taxi takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, and buses to Dharamshala leave from the bus stand near the station.
- The Kangra Valley Railway is a narrow-gauge line from Pathankot. Its closest station to Dharamshala is Chamunda Marg, about 21–22 km away. It is slow and scenic — a journey for its own sake rather than a practical connection — and services can be suspended, so check that it is running.
Check current train timings on the Indian Railways enquiry system before planning the connection.
By road
The drive is about 450–465 km. Route planners estimate roughly seven to eight hours of driving; allow nine to ten with meal stops and traffic leaving Delhi.
- The usual route runs north through Haryana and Punjab before climbing into Himachal.
- Start early so that the hill section is driven in daylight.
- Roads are affected by landslides in the monsoon; check conditions from July to September.
- In McLeod Ganj, confirm parking with your hotel before you arrive.
If you would rather not drive, a taxi or a car with driver is an option; see our taxis and transfers page.
Reaching McLeod Ganj from Dharamshala
McLeod Ganj is the upper part of town, about 700 m higher than the lower bazaar. Local buses, shared jeeps and taxis make the climb; allow 30–45 minutes at busy times because the single road jams. If your hotel is in Bhagsu or Dharamkot, ask how far it is on foot from the nearest road. More in Dharamshala vs McLeod Ganj.
Which should you choose?
- Weekend trip on a budget: overnight bus both ways.
- Three days or fewer, or travelling with older family: fly one or both ways.
- Family with a car and a week: drive, with a break en route.
- Coming from elsewhere in India by rail: train to Pathankot, taxi onward.
Season notes
- Monsoon (June to mid-September): the heaviest rain in Himachal falls here. Expect road delays and flight disruption; keep a buffer.
- Winter (December to late February): upper Dharamshala gets snow or sleet. The highway normally stays open; the last climb can be slippery.
- Peak season (April to June, long weekends): book buses and flights early.
