Short answer: choose by the kind of winter you want. For snow, go to the Himalaya — Manali and Solang, Shimla and Kufri, Auli or Gulmarg. For comfortable sightseeing, Rajasthan is at its best. For warmth, head to Goa, Kerala or the Andamans. Avoid the last week of December if you can: it is the most crowded and expensive time everywhere.
“Winter in India” can mean a snowed-in Himalayan village or a 30°C beach, depending on where you land. The country is large enough that the same week in December can be a ski trip in the north and a swim in the south. The trick is deciding what you actually want from the trip first.
A note on dates: late December to early January is the busiest stretch almost everywhere. Prices and crowds peak then, and roads in snow country are most likely to be disrupted. If you can, travel in November or from mid-January to February.
If you want snow
Manali, Shimla and Kufri (Himachal Pradesh)
The most accessible snow for a first-timer. Manali and the Solang area see snow in winter, and Shimla and Kufri are the closest snow points to Delhi and Chandigarh. Exact snowfall changes every year, so keep your plan flexible. For a detailed rundown, see our guide to the best places for snow in Himachal and, if you are driving, how to reach Manali from Delhi.
Auli (Uttarakhand)
Known for skiing and slope views of the Nanda Devi range, Auli is reachable from Joshimath. Winter access depends on snow clearance, so check road status before you set out. Our Auli destination page has more.
Gulmarg (Jammu & Kashmir)
Gulmarg is India’s best-known ski destination, built around a high-altitude gondola. It suits travellers who want serious snow rather than a light dusting. We cover the wider region in places to visit in Kashmir.
Spiti Valley, for experienced travellers only
Spiti in deep winter is stark, cold and cut off by snow for long stretches. It is rewarding, but it is not a casual holiday. Most travellers are better served visiting in the warmer window — see the best time to visit Spiti Valley.
If you want sunshine and culture
Rajasthan: Jaisalmer, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur
Winter is the comfortable season in Rajasthan: forts, palaces and desert camps are far easier to enjoy than in summer. Jaisalmer and the Sam sand dunes are the classic desert stop; Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur make a good city circuit. See our Rajasthan heritage circuit guide.
Rann of Kutch (Gujarat)
The white salt desert is a winter destination, with a seasonal festival and tent stays. Dates and arrangements vary by year, so confirm them close to travel.
Ranthambore (Rajasthan)
Cooler weather makes safaris more comfortable. Sightings are never guaranteed — treat any tiger sighting as a bonus.
If you want warm weather and water
Goa
Peak season for beaches, cafés and nightlife. It is also the most crowded and expensive period, so book early or travel just outside the New Year week. See things to do in Goa.
Kerala: Munnar, Alleppey, Varkala, Kochi
A good winter pairing of cool hills and warm backwaters. Houseboats and tea estates are the main draws.
Andaman Islands
Good for clear water and island hopping in the drier months. Ferries and flights need advance planning.
How to choose
- First time seeing snow, short trip: Manali or Shimla–Kufri.
- Skiing: Gulmarg or Auli.
- Culture, photography, comfortable days: Rajasthan.
- Beach and relaxation: Goa, Kerala or the Andamans.
- Couples: a mountain village plus a warm-weather break works well; combine regions only if you have a week or more.
Practical tips
- Check road and weather updates on the day you travel to snow regions. Closures happen.
- Book accommodation with heating, not just “mountain view”. Ask what kind of heating it is.
- Carry real winter layers and shoes with grip — snow towns are slippery.
- Keep one buffer day for weather in any mountain itinerary.

Three regions compared
| Himalayan snow | Rajasthan | Southern coast | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weather | Cold; snow at altitude | Mild days, cold nights | Warm |
| Best for | Snow, cosy stays, couples | Forts, culture, photography | Beaches, rest |
| Main risk | Road closures after snowfall | Peak-season crowds at monuments | High prices around New Year |
| Plan for | A buffer day and a heated room | Early starts | Early booking |
What drives the cost of a winter trip
We don’t publish prices, because they change by date. The biggest factors are your travel dates (Christmas and New Year cost far more), heated rooms in the mountains, the vehicle you need on snow days, and flights, which rise sharply close to the holidays. Ask for a quote for your actual dates rather than relying on an average.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best place in India for snow in December?
For ease of access, Manali and Shimla–Kufri; for skiing, Gulmarg and Auli. Snowfall varies from year to year, so confirm conditions close to your dates.
Is December or January better for travel in India?
Late December and early January are the busiest and most expensive. Mid-January to February is generally calmer while still being winter.
Can I visit Ladakh in winter?
Leh is open to visitors in winter, with very low temperatures and limited services; many roads and passes are closed. It is a trip for prepared travellers rather than a casual one.
What is the best winter destination for a honeymoon?
It depends on the couple: snow villages and cosy stays in the Himalaya, palaces in Rajasthan, or beaches in Goa and Kerala. See our note on what nobody tells you about a mountain honeymoon.
