15 Best Places to Visit in Kashmir: Complete Travel Guide

Kashmir earns the "paradise on earth" tag honestly — alpine meadows, pine-covered valleys, snow peaks and a lake culture found nowhere else in India. Here's what to prioritize on a first visit.

1. Dal Lake and Houseboats, Srinagar

The heart of any Kashmir trip. Staying a night or two on a traditional carved-wood houseboat on Dal Lake — complete with a resident caretaker and home-cooked meals — is as much the experience as any single sight in the city.

2. Shikara Rides and the Floating Vegetable Market

Gliding across the lake in a shikara (Kashmir's version of a gondola) past floating gardens and houseboats is the classic Srinagar morning. Time it for sunrise if you want to catch the floating vegetable market, where growers sell produce boat-to-boat.

3. Mughal Gardens: Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh

Built by Mughal emperors in the 17th century as terraced pleasure gardens overlooking Dal Lake, these are some of the best-preserved formal gardens in India — fountains, chinar trees and stepped lawns running down to the water.

4. Gulmarg and the Gondola

A meadow town that turns into one of Asia's highest ski destinations in winter. The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, climbs in two stages toward Apharwat Peak — ride it in summer for alpine views, or in winter for the ski slopes.

5. Pahalgam and the Lidder Valley

A quieter, greener counterpoint to Srinagar, set along the Lidder River and surrounded by pine forest. It's also the traditional base camp for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage and a good jumping-off point for day treks.

6. Sonmarg — the Meadow of Gold

The last major town before the Zoji La pass into Ladakh, ringed by glaciers and named for the golden hue its meadows take at sunrise. Thajiwas Glacier, a short pony ride or walk from town, is the main draw.

7. Betaab Valley

A narrow, densely forested valley near Pahalgam named after the Bollywood film shot here — dramatic enough scenery that it's become a stop in its own right, especially for the river crossing points and photo spots.

8. Khilanmarg for Snow and Views

A short trek or pony ride above Gulmarg opens onto Khilanmarg meadow, with one of the best panoramic views of Nanga Parbat on a clear day — usually snow-covered even outside peak winter.

9. Shankaracharya Temple, Srinagar

Perched on a hilltop above the city, this ancient Shiva temple gives the best elevated view over Dal Lake and Srinagar as a whole — worth the climb for the panorama alone.

10. Aru Valley

A small, quiet meadow village near Pahalgam that serves as the starting point for several treks, including the route toward Kolahoi Glacier — a good half-day trip if you want scenery without a full trek commitment.

11. Doodhpathri — the Valley of Milk

A less-visited meadow west of Srinagar, named for the milky-white froth of its streams. Fewer crowds than Gulmarg or Pahalgam make it a good add-on for travelers who've already covered the main circuit.

12. Try Wazwan, Kashmir's Signature Feast

A multi-course traditional meal built around slow-cooked mutton preparations — rogan josh, gushtaba and yakhni among them — usually served at weddings but available at dedicated restaurants in Srinagar too.

13. Shop for Pashmina and Kashmiri Crafts

Srinagar's old city lanes are the place for genuine pashmina shawls, walnut wood carving, and papier-mâché work — buy from established shops rather than houseboat touts if authenticity matters to you.

Best Time to Visit Kashmir

March to May brings tulip blooms and mild weather; June to August is pleasantly cool and the main travel season; September to October has clear skies and autumn colour in the chinar trees. December to February is ski season in Gulmarg, with much of the valley under snow.

For a planned trip, see our Kashmir destination guide, and read the Gulmarg guide for snow, skiing and the gondola.
