Gulmarg in winter: snow and skiing
- Snow: Gulmarg is usually the most reliable place in Kashmir for snow from about December to February, but snowfall varies from year to year. If snow is the reason for your trip, keep your dates flexible.
- Skiing: beginners can hire equipment and take lessons with instructors on the lower slopes. Experienced skiers use the upper gondola area; the high slopes carry avalanche risk, so go only with qualified guides and follow local advisories.
- Snow play without skiing: sledges and short snow walks around the bowl are the easiest way for families to enjoy the snow.
- Busy weeks: late December and early January are the busiest; hotels and gondola tickets go first.
The Gulmarg gondola
- Phase 1: from Gulmarg to Kongdoori, the middle station, at roughly 3,080 m. Good views and snow at the top in winter.
- Phase 2: from Kongdoori towards Apharwat, at roughly 3,900 m or more. It is the one most likely to close for wind or weather, and fewer tickets are issued for it.
- Tickets: recent guides quote fares of roughly ₹700–1,000 per phase per adult; fares and the booking process change, so check the official J&K cable car portal and avoid agents selling tickets at a premium.
- Timing: go early in the day; queues grow and weather often turns in the afternoon.
How to reach Gulmarg
- By air: fly to Srinagar, then drive about 1.5–2 hours.
- By road: Srinagar – Tangmarg – Gulmarg. The last stretch from Tangmarg, about 13–15 km, is steep and winding; after heavy snowfall it can be slow or briefly closed, and vehicles may need snow chains.
- Taxis: local taxis from Srinagar are the usual option; in winter use a driver who knows the Tangmarg road.
When to go
- December–February: snow, skiing and the classic winter views.
- March–April: late snow in some years, and fewer people.
- May–September: green meadows, walks and pony rides.
- October–November: clear, cold days before the snow; first snowfall can come in November.
Practical points
- Stays are limited in Gulmarg itself; book early for winter, or stay in Tangmarg or Srinagar and go for the day.
- Carry proper winter clothing: thermals, a waterproof outer layer, gloves and snow boots, which can also be hired locally.
- Agree prices for ponies, guides, sledges and equipment hire before you start.
- Keep a spare day in winter for road or weather delays.
