Short answer: in April, choose hill stations such as Manali, Shimla, Dharamshala, Mussoorie or Darjeeling. From late May and June, the high-altitude regions — Ladakh, Spiti and Lahaul — become accessible as roads open. Munnar and Coorg work in April and May but not once the monsoon arrives in June.
By April most of the Indian plains are hot enough that “somewhere cool” becomes the whole brief. The good news is that this is also when the high Himalaya starts to open. The catch is timing: the best summer destinations at altitude depend on roads that open late, so the right place in April is often the wrong place in early May.
The high-altitude escapes (best from late May and June)
Leh–Ladakh
Ladakh’s season broadly runs through the summer, but access routes open at different times — the Manali and Srinagar roads typically reopen by late spring, and sources differ on the exact dates, which change every year. Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley and Khardung La are the main draws. Plan acclimatisation days in Leh before going higher. Our best time to visit Leh Ladakh and 7-day itinerary go deeper.
Spiti Valley
The most road-dependent destination on this list. The valley is generally accessible from around mid-May to mid-October, with Key Monastery, Chandratal and Pin Valley the highlights. Read the best time to visit Spiti and our 7-day itinerary.
North Sikkim
April to June is one of the usual windows for Lachung, Yumthang Valley and Gurudongmar Lake. Permits are required for parts of North Sikkim; arrange them before you go.
The cool hill stations (good through April–June)
Manali, Shimla and Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh)
Pleasant when the plains are not, and easy to reach by road from Delhi and Chandigarh. Weekends in May and June are crowded, so go midweek if you can. See the best time to visit Manali.
Mussoorie, Nainital and Auli (Uttarakhand)
Short drives from the plains, with the usual summer traffic jams on weekends. For a wider view see best places to visit in Uttarakhand.
Darjeeling
Spring and early summer are among the usual recommendations: tea gardens, the toy train and sunrise views of Kanchenjunga on clear mornings.
Munnar and Coorg (south)
Tea and coffee country is pleasant in April and May. The monsoon reaches the south in June, so do not plan Kerala for the second half of the month.
Mount Abu and Tawang
Two further options that appear on most summer lists: Mount Abu for a short, easy break from Gujarat and Rajasthan, and Tawang for those who want a long, remote journey in the north-east.
Timing cheat sheet
| Destination | Typical window | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Leh–Ladakh | Late spring to early autumn | Road openings; altitude sickness |
| Spiti Valley | ~Mid-May to mid-October | Landslides, early/late snow |
| North Sikkim | April–June, Oct–Dec | Permits; landslides in monsoon |
| Manali / Shimla | April–June | Weekend crowds |
| Darjeeling | April–June | Early starts for sunrise views |
| Munnar | April–May | Monsoon from June |
These are general windows compiled from travel sources; they vary year to year. Confirm road status and permits close to your dates.
Practical tips
- At altitude, ascend gradually and rest; do not fly straight into Leh and go to a high pass the same day.
- Carry layers even in June — nights at high altitude are cold.
- Book hotels and any permits early for May and June; school holidays push demand.
- Keep a spare day: landslides and road work can delay a drive.

Lahaul: the easy high-altitude option
Since the Atal Tunnel opened, the Lahaul valley has been reachable from Manali in about an hour and a half. Sissu and Jispa give you the dry, open landscape of the high Himalaya without the long journey to Ladakh. See places to visit in Sissu and the Jispa travel guide.
What drives the cost of a summer trip
May and June are peak season in the hills, so the same room costs more than in April or September. Other large factors are the vehicle (a high-clearance car and driver for Spiti or Ladakh costs more than a hill-station taxi), permits where required, and how many days you drive. We don’t quote prices here; ask for a quote for your dates.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the coolest place in India in May?
High-altitude regions such as Ladakh, Spiti and North Sikkim are the coolest, but their roads and permits are the main constraint. Hill stations like Manali, Shimla and Darjeeling are easier.
Is Ladakh open in April?
Leh can be visited, but key high-altitude roads and some tourist areas may not yet be fully open. Check current road status before booking.
Where should I go with kids in summer?
Choose lower-altitude hill stations — Shimla, Mussoorie, Dharamshala, Darjeeling — over high passes, which are harder on children.
Is summer a good time for a honeymoon?
Yes, if you pick a cool destination and book early. Many couples choose a quieter valley over a busy hill station — see places tourists usually miss in Himachal.
