Best Snowfall Destinations in India — and How Reliable Each One Is

Short answer: for the best odds of snow, go high and go in January or February. Gulmarg in Kashmir and the Solang–Atal Tunnel side of Manali are the most dependable easy-access choices; Auli in Uttarakhand is the classic ski slope when it has had a good season. Lower hill stations such as Shimla, Mussoorie and Nainital do get snow, but in short spells that are easy to miss.

Two things decide whether you see snow: altitude and timing. Everything else — including what a website promised — is secondary.

How to read any “snow destination” list

  • Higher is more dependable. Places above roughly 2,500 m hold snow for weeks; towns around 2,000 m get it in spells.
  • January and February beat December. Late December is the busiest and often has less snow than visitors expect.
  • The road is part of the answer. The snowiest places are also the ones most likely to be cut off for a day or two.
  • Every winter is different. Treat all of this as likelihood, not a guarantee.

Likelihood ratings are our general guidance from published sources, not measurements. Heights are approximate.

Gulmarg, Kashmir

India’s best-known ski area sits at about 2,650 m, around 56 km from Srinagar. Its two-stage gondola climbs from the meadow to a shoulder of Apharwat at roughly 4,000 m, which is why snow there lasts when lower places are bare. It suits people who want real snow and skiing rather than a dusting. More in places to visit in Kashmir.

Manali, Solang and the Atal Tunnel side

Manali town’s snow is unpredictable; the slopes above it are far better. Solang is the usual base for snow activities, and the Atal Tunnel has put the snowfields of Lahaul within about an hour and a half — when the police allow tourist traffic. Read Manali in winter and the Atal Tunnel guide before you plan.

Auli, Uttarakhand

A ski slope above Joshimath at around 2,800–2,900 m, with wide Himalayan views. It is a long drive into the mountains, and snow depth varies from season to season, so check recent conditions before committing. See our Auli destination page.

Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda

The closest snow to Delhi and Chandigarh. Shimla itself sees occasional snowfall; Kufri and Narkanda, higher up, are better bets. Ideal for a short first snow trip, with the caveat that you may arrive between spells.

Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Nainital and Dalhousie

Pleasant winter hill stations where snow is a bonus rather than the plan. Go for the cold-weather atmosphere, and be pleased if it snows.

North Sikkim and Tawang

Spectacular and high, with permits, long road days and frequent closures. Rewarding for travellers who have time and flexibility; a poor fit for a fixed four-day holiday.

Which one should you choose?

If you…Consider
Want the best chance of deep snowGulmarg
Are driving from Delhi or ChandigarhManali–Solang, or Shimla–Kufri–Narkanda
Have three days and small childrenShimla–Kufri or Manali–Solang
Want to learn to skiGulmarg or Auli (season permitting), or Solang for a first try
Are on a honeymoonManali with a heated stay, or Gulmarg

Planning so that a closure does not ruin the trip

  1. Add one buffer day to any snow itinerary.
  2. Choose a base that is worth being stuck in.
  3. Book a heated room and ask what the heating actually is.
  4. Use local drivers and 4x4s on snow days.
  5. Check the forecast and local advisories the evening before each excursion.

Safety in the snow

  • Stay off frozen lakes and rivers.
  • Avoid slopes loaded with fresh snow and follow local closures — avalanches are a real risk in high areas.
  • Dress children in waterproof layers; wet cotton gets cold fast.
  • Above 3,000 m, take the first hour slowly and descend if anyone feels unwell.
