Dharamshala sits at a point where the plains meet the Dhauladhar wall, which means its weather swings more dramatically by season than most Himachal hill stations. Here's how each stretch of the year actually plays out.
March to May: Spring, and the Start of Trekking Season
Snow starts retreating from the Triund trail by late March, rhododendrons bloom across the lower slopes, and daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the high teens to low twenties (°C). This is one of the two best windows for trekking, with nights still cool enough to need a jacket.
June: Warm, with the Monsoon Approaching
Early June is still good for travel — warmer days, occasional pre-monsoon showers, and green hillsides. By late June, monsoon clouds start building, and it's worth checking forecasts before committing to the Triund trek.
July to August: Monsoon — Best Avoided
Heavy rainfall is common, mountain roads are prone to landslides, and the Triund trail turns slippery and leech-prone. Dharamshala still functions and some travelers enjoy the mist-covered valleys, but this is the one window we'd actively recommend against unless you have no other option.
September to November: The Best Window Overall
Post-monsoon clarity brings the clearest mountain views of the year, dry trails, and comfortable daytime temperatures. This is peak season for a reason — book accommodation ahead, especially around October's festival period.
December to February: Snow Season
McLeod Ganj itself occasionally gets snowfall, and the surrounding ridgelines are reliably white. It's a beautiful, quieter time to visit, with cosy café culture at its best — but the Triund trail typically closes or requires proper winter gear, so this is more a season for temple visits and slow café days than trekking.
Quick Recommendation
Trekking to Triund: April–June or late September–November. Snow and cosy café season: late December–February. Avoid: July–August unless monsoon scenery is specifically what you're after.
