Short answer: The places that stay affordable for two are those you can reach by overnight bus or train, with plenty of small guesthouses and days that cost little: McLeod Ganj, Kasol, Jibhi, Bir and Manali's old town in Himachal; Rishikesh and Mussoorie in Uttarakhand; Udaipur and Pushkar in Rajasthan; and Pondicherry, Varkala or south Goa on the coast. Travelling outside peak weeks saves more than the choice of destination.

Where the money actually goes
- Transport: usually the biggest line. A private cab for the whole trip costs far more than bus or train plus local taxis.
- Dates: long weekends, late May–June and Christmas–New Year push room rates up sharply.
- Location: a room on the main square costs more than one ten minutes' walk away.
- Activities: pick one paid highlight; fill the rest with walks, viewpoints and markets.
- Food: local dhabas and thali meals are good and inexpensive almost everywhere.
What not to cut
- A safe, licensed driver on mountain roads.
- A room with reliable hot water and heating in cold months.
- Registered operators for rafting, paragliding and treks.
- A spare day, in case a road closes.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the cheapest romantic destination in India?
It depends on where you start. From Delhi, McLeod Ganj, Kasol, Jibhi and Rishikesh are among the easiest to do inexpensively because of overnight buses and small guesthouses.
How can a couple cut costs on a hill trip?
Travel midweek and outside holiday weeks, use buses or trains for the long leg, and stay a short walk from the centre.
Is Manali expensive for couples?
It has rooms at every level. Old Manali and Vashisht are usually cheaper than the Mall Road area.
Which months are cheapest?
The weeks just before and after peak season — for the hills, March–April and September–November.
Do you publish package prices?
No fixed list; prices depend on dates and choices, so we quote for your trip.
